Tribal council member for the Dunlap Band of Mono Indians, Florence Dick (Western Mono) is a lifelong resident of the foothills adjacent to Kings Canyon/Sequoia National Park. An avid gatherer of traditional foods and basket materials, she carries forward the heritage of both her parents who were well known basket weavers. She maintains deep relationships with plant relatives through active gathering and cultural practice, applying traditional stewardship practices on trust lands to ensure the continuity of Mono ecological knowledge for future generations.

I like to share and answer questions, and mix with the curious. - Florence Dick

At the UC Davis California Native Plant Foods Celebration and Symposium, she will be sharing traditional techniques for cordage-making and weaving using saltgrass and slippery elm (Fremontodendron sp.) for tying cooking utensils and grass house construction. Through sharing these meaningful practices, Florence invites participants into relationship with the plant relatives that continue to sustain California's Native communities.
